Author Bio:
An Oregon native, Megan is a Criminology and Religion student who lives with her husband, daughters, and menagerie of eccentric pets.
What inspires you to write?
These days, my inspiration for writing would be all the fun conversations and brainstorms I have with my husband during our late night “insomnia parties”.
Tell us about your writing process.
I generally go out and purchase a new notebook. I then begin writing down ideas, names, character biographies, anything that comes to mind.
I would have to say that I am both an outliner and a “seat of the pants” writer. I have notebook upon notebook with ideas, dossiers, and plot bunnies. I used to use whiteboards, which were all over my apartment (including the windows and doors), but now I mostly use audio recordings if I can’t write down my ideas.
When I sit down to write, I just go until I hit a block, at which point I will take a break and come back when the block is gone.
For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
Yes, I talk to my characters. Kalen and Tweek would have to be the loudest of the two in my current series, but (to give up a small spoiler of my next book) Sigyn and Moros tend to need separating a lot more as of late. The twins do not get along, and like to pick at each other until I put them on opposite ends of my brain.
I have had moments while I was writing, where one of my characters would shout, “Seriously?! I don’t talk like that!” and I have to pause and let them finish before I go back and fix what I’d just written.
What advice would you give other writers?
Don’t force yourself to write. If it’s not coming along, step back…take a break, and try again later. If it’s still not flowing, jump around and come back to your block later.
How did you decide how to publish your books?
I was originally approached after posting a few teaser chapters on a writing website, and was published through a new publishing company known as Umbraprojects Publishing. When the market crashed in 2008, so did the company, and I began to search around for a new publisher. After several rejection letters, I decided to self publish. I originally went through Lulu, but didn’t like the distribution options and charges. A friend pointed me towards Createspace, and while it’s not perfect, it works for now.
What do you think about the future of book publishing?
I think that we should continue to publish hard copies of the books, even though it is easier and cheaper to do eBook only. There is just something about holding the actual book in your hands.
